Surprising Letter from Robert Wyatt

When I wrote an interesting episode of Dave Sinclair on my Japanese Blog, my memory was a bit confused. Then Dave helped me, sending e-mail about the detail of the episode.

This time I decide to set it up on this Blog, of course having Dave's permission...

Faro

I met up with John Murphy only a week after I left Caravan in August 1971.
He had phoned me, and I suggested that we met in the Seven Stars pub in the middle of Canterbury. Our meeting was spectacular, and we got on right from the start. I especially liked his sense of humour, it was outrageous !

We got on so well socially and musically that we spent a whole month playing and writing music together.

But one day suddenly, John said that he was going to Portugal for his honeymoon the next week !
It was a bit of a shock to say the least, but he gave me his address so that I could keep in touch. He was staying at his sisters house in Faro in the south of Portugal, and had travelled by ferry via Lisbon.

Well, stupidly, at the time, writing wasn't enough for me, as I was missing our musical collaboration so much.

So, I decided to look him up. I packed a rucksack and hitch-hiked for 8 days, travelling through France and Spain, until I eventually found his sisters house in the town of Faro. Without having had access to a shower, and with very little food or sleep, I must have looked a mess !
I knocked on the door, and was confronted by a very very shocked John Murphy staring at me ! I wish to this day that I had a photo of the expression on
his face !!

But of course, later it dawned on me, hey, this is John's honeymoon ! ... should I actually be here ???

Anyway, before I left the UK, I had left John's sisters address with my friend in Canterbury.

After staying at the house in Faro for a few days, I was handed a letter from England, and being utterly surprised to get a letter, I opened it in a hurry.
It was from Robert Wyatt !! It just said the words " Come Back, Your Country Needs You" !!

What happened after that was another very interesting story !!
.......................................( as I lost all my money...all 6 pounds of it ! )
